Video of the Week

Here is a slightly mean way to set up both the Kimura and the howdy choke from side control top. You use the point of your elbow to put pressure down on your opponent's bicep to kill their ability to use the muscles in their arm

Featured Video: The Smother

I love the smother, maybe because I am a bad person, but I think it is a super effective tool to have in your grappling bag of tricks. While it can be used as a submission, it is also very effective for inducing panic in your opponent. Most people do not like the feeling of not being able to breath, so that panic makes them try to remove the smother. When doing so they often open up other opportunities to attack.

Jailbreak Series from Side Control

Jail Break back to guard

Here is a quick video on how to establish the Jailbreak hook to regain guard. It is part of a series I did on the Jailbreak escape. The key is being up on your side so you can shrimp to create space for your hook. Frame your partner's hip away then shrimp out. From there, insert your jailbreak hook and shrimp back in. Use your hook to elevate and bring your other leg in to recover guard.

Jailbreak to over the top

Like in the last move, we are going to shrimp out to insert our Jailbreak hook. From there w are going to clamp over the arm near our hips. As we hip back under our partner, we want to elevate the leg similar to a butterfly sweep using the clamp on the shoulder to eliminate our opponent's post. After the sweep you can either come up on top or wrap the arm and finish the arm lock if you know it.

Jailbreak to Baseball Bat Choke

This time in the Gi, we insert our jailbreak hook under our partner's hips. We then use this hook to maintain space while we establish our baseball bat grip. Once the grip is in place, push off with the Jailbreak hook and roll away from your partner bringing your elbows together under their chin. At the same time pull them tight to you to bring them with you on the roll and secure the choke.

Attacks from the Tag-Grip in Turtle

Tag-grip to Backtake

From turtle I am going to fold my opponent's collar and grip it with my near arm using that arm as a level to help keep my partner in the turtle. I will then move out to my toes, and use that to pop up to my feet. From there use my outside arm to help sit my opponent upright. Once they are up, I step my hooks in and take the back.

Tag-grip to Clock Choke

From turtle I am going to fold my opponent's collar and grip it with my near arm using that arm as a level to help keep my partner in the turtle. I will then shift their collar over to the far side. Reaching under their neck I get a solid grip on the collar. I remove my near arm, reach over and grab my opponent's arm. From there, I kick my weight out and away so the tension is pulled through my opponent and begin to walk around, tightening the choke.

Tag-grip to Triangle Choke

From turtle I am going to fold my opponent's collar and grip it with my near arm using that arm as a level to help keep my partner in the turtle. Using my free hand I want to dig my partner's near arm out and isolate it away from their body. I will then slide my near leg under getting a grip on my partner's neck. I will the sit back and slide into the triangle choke position.
